History of Morrison Elementary
Morrison Elementary 1988
Morrison Elementary opened in 1975, providing a modern learning environment that included 10 teaching stations, a cafeteria, a stage, a media center, a multi-activity area, administrative offices, and conference spaces. Named in honor of Harry C. Morrison, a notable Fort Smith educator, the school has continually evolved to meet the needs of its students. Significant expansions and renovations over the years have enhanced its facilities, transforming it into a secure, spacious, and innovative learning environment.
Major Milestones in Morrison History
- 1975: Morrison Elementary opened its doors as a modern facility designed to support up to 300 students.
- 2015: The school underwent a major renovation, doubling in size to accommodate more students and enhance the learning environment.
- 2019: The school, which had been an open-walled design since its construction, was reconfigured and enclosed to provide safer, more secure, and effective learning spaces. Updates also included improvements to the HVAC systems and the addition of a secure vestibule to control access to the building.
- 2024: A significant expansion added 10 classrooms, a new dining room with a stage and storage, updated bathrooms, an entrance lobby, and a new administrative suite. Renovations were also made to the kitchen, the existing dining room, and the multi-purpose room. These changes provided students and staff with more space and a state-of-the-art learning environment.

Who was Harry C. Morrison?
Harry C. Morrison (1870-1944) was a prominent figure in Fort Smith education. He was born in Warrensburg, Missouri. Morrison served as the principal of Belle Grove School before becoming the principal of Fort Smith Senior High School in 1905. He held that position until 1922. For five years after, he led the Advanced Military Academy.
Morrison was married to Anna L. Morrison. They had one daughter, Helene Morrison. Helene followed in her father’s footsteps, teaching in Fort Smith Public Schools from 1923 until her retirement in 1962.
Harry C. Morrison’s impact on education in Fort Smith was significant. His leadership and dedication helped shape the local school system. Today, Morrison Elementary honors his legacy, continuing his commitment to education.
